Our first day at the cabin began at 6 a.m. we were exhausted from driving through the night but the kids could not take a minute to rest….down to the river we headed. We simply walked down the stairs and there we were. The beauty of the river literally took my breath away. As my kids began climbing from rock to rock I got a chance to look at the surroundings. In front of me was our own private river so peaceful and exciting at the same time, and behind me was our perfect River Retreat Cabin. Do i really get to spend a whole week here? I had to pinch myself.
I explained to my four year old daughter that later that evening we would roast marshmallows near the perfectly placed fire pit. She was so excited she could hardly contain herself.
After my husband attempted to “catch” dinner with the kids the day was slowly coming to an end. We enjoyed soaking in the hot tub that over looked the back yard and river. Each evening it was a relaxing treat before heading in for the night.
I was afraid at how the kids would sleep in a new place so far from home in Florida, but the rooms were so comfortable and cozy they both slept great. My husband and I somehow ended up sleeping in the upstairs loft, which actually turned out to be quite a treat. The sounds of the river were so tranquil, I slept like a baby.
The next day we decided to go hiking. The nature trails were literally right around the corner from the cabin. What an amazing experience to have with the kids. We got a chance to become “one” with nature and loved it! My husband took his mountain bike down the harder trails, so the kids and I took our time down the easy ones. We all enjoyed it so much we went again later in the week.
Throughout our trip we had an opportunity to drive through the town of Blue Ridge. We stopped at Mercier Orchards for some fresh fruit and veggies and amazing homemade jam. Of course we couldn’t resist their famous fresh “fried pies.” All I can say is Yummy!
We did not get a chance to go canoeing or tubing down the river but considering there is a rental place a mile away we will plan on doing that on our next trip up.

My favorite time though was waking up every morning and drinking my coffee out on the huge open deck. the kids would run around in their pajamas and try to find leaves to throw over the railing. The sound of the river, the shade from the enormous trees it was almost surreal. It was so great knowing that we couldĀ have a day filled with activities or nothing at all and either way it would be a great day.
Needless to say we truly enjoyed our time at “A River Retreat.” Our kids are only four and two but I know it was a vacation they will never forget. I can’t wait to start planning to come back next year.
